The best time to visit El Paredón

· 5 min read

Dusk at a beach bar on the Pacific coast

El Paredón has two seasons, and both are good for different things. The deciding factors are heat, rain, and how big you want the surf — plus one calendar trap: the long weekends when everyone from the capital has the same idea.

Dry season — November to April

Sun almost every day, calm and hot — regularly 30°C and more at noon. The waves are smaller and cleaner, which is ideal for learning and for slow beach days. December and January can bring strong wind on the coast; the mornings are the calm window.

Rainy season — May to October

This is surf season: the southern swells are bigger and more consistent. Rain usually falls in heavy afternoon or evening bursts rather than all day, so mornings on the water are often dry. The countryside is green and the sunsets are dramatic; the road down can be slower in a downpour.

The weeks to avoid, or to book early

  • Semana Santa (Easter week) — the busiest beach week of the year in Guatemala.
  • Long weekends around public holidays — shuttles fill up days in advance.
  • The Independence Day break in mid-September.

The shuttle runs every day, in both seasons. If you are travelling around a holiday, book your seats as soon as your dates are fixed.

Frequently asked questions

Is the rainy season a bad time to visit El Paredón?
No — it is many surfers’ favourite time. Expect short, heavy showers rather than constant rain, bigger waves, and lower prices than the dry-season weekends.
How hot does it get?
Hot all year: the coast sits at sea level, and 30–34°C at midday is normal in the dry season. Plan the beach for the morning and late afternoon, carry water, and use sunscreen — the equatorial sun is unforgiving even under cloud.
