Getting there
El Paredón as a day trip from Antigua: is it worth it?
· 5 min read

Short on time in Guatemala but desperate to see the Pacific? El Paredón works as a day trip from Antigua — just. You spend about as long on the road as on the beach, so it is worth knowing exactly what you are signing up for before you book.
The timing, hour by hour
Only one combination works on the same day: the 09:00 departure from Antigua and the 15:00 departure back from El Paredón. Our booking form will not let you pick any other same-day pairing, because the van would leave before you arrived.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 08:50 | Be at your Antigua pick-up point |
| 09:00 | Departure, with one comfort stop on the way |
| around 11:00 | Drop-off at Super 24, in the centre of El Paredón |
| 14:50 | Back at the El Paredón pick-up point you chose |
| around 17:00 | Drop-off at Café la Parada, Antigua — traffic permitting |
Four hours: how to spend them
- A surf lesson. Several schools in the village teach beginners; message one the day before so a board and instructor are waiting when you arrive.
- A long lunch facing the sea — fresh fish or ceviche, feet in the sand. Bring quetzales in cash.
- A walk along the black-sand beach, and a swim where you see others swimming — currents can be strong.
- A hammock and a cold drink. Honestly, that is half of what El Paredón is about.
What a day trip misses
Be honest with yourself: the best of El Paredón happens at the edges of the day. The glassy early-morning surf, the mangrove boat trips that leave early or late, the sunset around six o’clock and the turtle releases at dusk in season all fall outside an 11:00–15:00 window. You also arrive in the hottest part of the day. If any of those are why you are going, stay at least one night.
Who the day trip suits
It is a good fit if you are based in Antigua for a Spanish course or a few days of work, if you want a taste of the coast before deciding whether to come back for longer, or if your itinerary simply has one free day. It is a poor fit if you hate long drives, if you are travelling with small children, or on Sundays and long weekends, when the return road can stretch well beyond two hours.
Pack small, and keep the door open
A day bag is enough: swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, hat, water, a light layer for the ride and cash. If you are torn between a day and a few nights, decide before you book: the return date can only be changed free of charge up to 48 hours before the return, so on a same-day trip that window has already closed by the time you reach the beach.
Same-day round trip: book the 09:00 from Antigua and the 15:00 back from El Paredón, $45 per person. Seats are confirmed online immediately.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I take the 14:00 shuttle and come back the same day?
- No. The 14:00 arrives around 16:00, after the last departure back at 15:00. For a same-day return, the outbound must be the 09:00.
- Where can I leave my bags during the day?
- Leave your main luggage at your Antigua hotel and travel with a day bag. In the village, some cafés and surf schools may mind a small bag if you are a customer — ask politely, and keep valuables with you.
- What if I miss the 15:00 shuttle back?
- The van cannot wait, and there is no later shared departure that day. Message us straight away — we will try to move you to the 09:00 the next morning — and be ready to find a bed in the village for the night.
