Getting there

From Guatemala City airport to El Paredón: the realistic options

· 7 min read

A cobbled street in Antigua Guatemala with the volcano behind

Almost every international traveller reaches El Paredón through La Aurora International Airport (GUA) in Guatemala City. There is no direct public link from the terminal to the coast, so the question is really two questions: how you get out of the capital, and whether you break the journey in Antigua. For most people, the answer depends on one thing — what time the plane lands.

The geography in one paragraph

Antigua sits in a highland valley roughly an hour west of the airport — more at rush hour, when the climb out of Guatemala City can easily double that. El Paredón is on the Pacific coast, south of both, reached by the highway down through Escuintla and then the coast road via Sipacate. Driving straight from the airport to the beach takes around three hours depending on traffic; going via Antigua adds a stop but not much distance, since Antigua is a sensible place to sleep off a long flight anyway.

Landing in the afternoon or at night: sleep in Antigua

This is the plan we recommend to most people. Book a shuttle or a private transfer from the airport to Antigua (plenty of companies run them, and many hotels arrange one), have dinner under the volcanoes, and take our 09:00 departure the next morning. You are on the beach before lunch, rested, and you have seen Antigua — which deserves at least an evening. It also avoids the coast road after dark, which is the one thing we would ask you not to do on your first night in the country.

Landing early: the same-day connection

If your flight lands early in the morning, you can reach the beach the same day on the 14:00 shuttle from Antigua. Work backwards: be at your Antigua pick-up point by 13:50, allow one to two hours for the transfer from the airport depending on traffic, and add time for immigration and bags. If that leaves you squeezed, do not gamble — book the next morning instead. The van keeps its timetable for everyone on board and cannot wait for a delayed flight.

Going straight to the coast

A private van from the terminal to El Paredón skips Antigua entirely. It makes sense when you are four or more, travelling with children, or simply want to be in a hammock by evening. Our shared shuttle does not stop at the airport; for a private van with your own timing, email us your date, flight time and group size and we will tell you what we can arrange. Whatever you book, plan to arrive in daylight.

Flying home from the beach

The safest plan is to spend your last night in Antigua: take any shuttle back from El Paredón the day before, and you are an easy hour or so from the terminal on departure day. If you must fly the same day, only the 09:00 shuttle from El Paredón works, arriving in Antigua around 11:00 — so it suits evening flights, not morning ones, and never on a Sunday afternoon or the end of a long weekend, when the roads back from the coast and into the capital are at their slowest.

Our shuttle runs Antigua → El Paredón at 09:00 and 14:00, and El Paredón → Antigua at 09:00 and 15:00, every day. $25 one way, $45 round trip — and you can change the return date for free up to 48 hours before.

Frequently asked questions

Does your shuttle pick up at La Aurora airport?
No. The shared shuttle runs between Antigua and El Paredón only. Get to Antigua first by airport shuttle or private transfer, or email us about a private van if you want to go straight to the coast.
How long does it take from the airport to El Paredón?
Around three hours by private car straight down, depending heavily on traffic leaving the capital. Via Antigua, count roughly an hour to Antigua and two more on the shuttle, plus any wait between the two.
Can I book the shuttle before I know if my flight is on time?
Yes, but choose a departure with a real margin — ideally the next morning. If your flight is badly delayed, message us as early as possible: cancellations more than 48 hours ahead are refunded in full, and within 48 hours we keep 10%.
Is it safe to travel from the airport to the coast at night?
We advise against it, especially by public transport. Roads are poorly lit, speed bumps are often unmarked and public connections thin out. If you land late, sleep in Antigua or near the airport and travel in daylight.
