El Paredón beyond the surf: mangroves, sunsets and slow days

· 6 min read

Mangrove roots along a boat channel on the Pacific coast

El Paredón is a one-street village of sand, surfboards and seafood, and most people arrive meaning to stay two nights and leave after five. The surf explains the first day. What keeps you is everything around it.

The mangrove channels

Behind the beach, the Sipacate-Naranjo national park spreads out in a labyrinth of mangrove channels where herons, kingfishers and the occasional crocodile live. Local guides run small boats through it — a couple of hours of flat water, birds everywhere and shade instead of sun. Go early or late; the light through the roots is the point.

Turtles, when the season is on

This stretch of coast is a nesting beach for sea turtles, and several local hatcheries protect the nests and release the hatchlings at dusk. Releases depend entirely on nature — some weeks there are dozens, some weeks none. Ask in the village what is happening while you are there; when it happens, watching a hundred tiny turtles make for the Pacific is the memory of the trip.

Six o’clock every evening

The Pacific sunset is the village’s daily ceremony: everyone drifts to the sand, some with a beer, some with a board, and the sky does the rest. Stay for dinner — grilled fish, ceviche and fried plantain, feet in the sand. This is not a resort strip, and that is the appeal.

The village is small and everything is walkable — sandals or bare feet, a headlamp after dark, and cash, because card readers are rare and the nearest reliable ATM is back towards Sipacate.

Frequently asked questions

Is El Paredón only for surfers?
Not at all. The mangroves, the beach, the fishing-village food and the sunsets fill a few days easily. Surfers set the rhythm of the mornings; everyone owns the evenings.
How many days should I stay?
Two nights is the minimum — enough for a surf, a mangrove morning and a sunset. Three or four lets you slow down properly, which is really the point of the place.
